What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body is unable to produce insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels.

  • Autoimmune condition: The body’s immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
  • Insulin dependence: People with Type 1 diabetes need to take insulin injections or use an insulin pump for life to manage blood sugar levels.
  • Typically diagnosed early: It’s often diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults, but can occur at any age.
